Smooth Coat Curlies
In our rare and unique Curly Horse, we have an oxymoron: Some Curly Horses are born and remain straight haired all their life. They do not have curly hair inside their ears, nor show much evidence of curl anywhere else. They may have some wave in their manes or tails, but not enough to distinguish them from other breeds. They often carry some Curly Horse characteristics including being hypoallergenic. Some smooth coated Curly Horses, however, do retain many or all of these other Curly Horse characteristics, such as having a very peaceful temperament and being hypoallergenic.
Often these "SC's" (smooth coats) will often have a fine coat of hair, or "bunny fur," that starts out fluffy or unruly looking their first year. Some have cowlicks. Some keep bunny hair their whole life. SC's with excellent Curly Horse pedigrees and conformation are considered as excellent breeding animals, to keep bloodlines intact, and reduce the number of extreme trait curly foals. Owners that have owned smooth coats love them and often say they are their favorite horses.
