Research and information about CA- Cerebellar Abiotrophy http://ichocurlyhorses.org
Cerebellar Abiotrophy is a recessive disease found in the Arabian horse and has been found to be passed on to other breeds that carry Arabian breeding through research conducted at UC Davis. It is a recessive gene that in the homozygous state, affects the coordination controlling area of the brain and the Purkinje cells in the brain degenerate. Since the gene is recessive there can be carriers of the CA gene that show no clinical symptoms. Carriers are healthy horses, they just should not be bred to other carriers or affected horses. Researchers are advising that owners of Arabian horses as well as owners of breeds carrying Arabian in their pedigree be tested for CA before breeding. Affected horses and carrier horses should not be bred together. To read more about how this affects Curlies that carry Arabian in their pedigree see The Horse article below and read about the disease at the cerebellar-abiotrophy website linked below. No known cases of affected Curlies with clinical symptoms have been found to date. Owners are testing their Curlies as a precaution.

The research study conducted by UC Davis tested 1845 horses of 31 breeds, including 143 Curly horses that were not out of the same sire or dam. Of those 143 Curlies, 8 were found to be carrier of the CA mutation associated with CA in Arabian horses, meaning they have one copy and are not affected with the disease. These 8 carrier (N/CA) Curlies all traced back to a popular Arabian stallion used in the 1960's to build up the breed according to UC Davis. So far no affected (CA/CA) CA Curlies have been found in their research study, nor in the Curly population. UC Davis is advising that all horses with Arabian heritage be tested for CA before breeding, ICHO is following their advice and requesting that all breeding Curlies that carry Arabian in their heritage or pedigrees be tested.
ICHO has taken on the project of recording and tracking CA test results in Curlies as part of our research into the health and well being of the Curly horse. We would like to recommend that all breeders that use breeding Curlies with Arabian in their pedigree, and/or use Arabians in their breeding program, have those Curlies and/or Arabs tested for CA before breeding. ICHO will offer a list of the Curly horses test results with owner permission on this webpage. Arabian results can be listed on the Cerebellar Abiotrophy website as well as here if desired under non-Curly Arabian and crossbreds.
Tested Horse's will be listed as:
N/N- Clear
N/CA- Carrier
CA/CA- Affected
This info will come from the lab test results. Once you receive your lab results, send the results to the office- [email protected] ICHO has an agreement now with VetGen for testing ICHO members horses at a discounted fee of $35.00. The test through UC Davis is $40.00 right now.
This list of tested Curlies will give the breeder the opportunity to show they want the results known so we can keep this disease out of the breeding pool as it is the responsible thing to do. CA is incurable, so let us all do all we can for the Curly horse. *Note- this is for horses with Arabian in their pedigrees either recent or in the past and or horses that carry other breeds shown to have CA. Please refer to The Horse article or the UC Davis website for more info as to breeds found to be carrier of the CA mutation. *To date we have no known Curlies affected with clinical symptoms or two copies of the CA mutation* We do request that breeders and owners alert ICHO if they have a horse or foal symptomatic for CA.
