Curly Coat Genes and Inheritance
Two Curly Coat Dominant Genes have been identified-
KRT25 found in the Damele, Native/Warrior, Fredell, Canadian, WY Salt Wells mustangs and many of the Nevada mustangs.
SP6 has been found to come from Curly Jim, founding sire of the gaited Curly line which includes Walker's Prince T.
Horses that have one of these genes (heterozygous) will be Curly coated. If a Curly has two copies of one gene they will be homozygous. Some Curly horses have also been found to carry both genes KRT25 and SP6 and are Dual Gened Heterozygous.
More updates to come as research proceeds.
