"is my North American Curly Horse stallion
HOMOZYGOUS for producing curls?"

Most breeders are looking for that rare quality Curly Stallion, that is Suspected HOMOZYGOUS for producing curly coated foals. We thought we would share with you, 2 tables that indicate what percent chance a stallion has of being suspected homozygous for curls, by the number of curly foals he has produced. We can now test for two Curly Coat Genes- KRT25 and SP6 to see if your horse is homozygous.

DISCLAIMER #1:
The term, Suspected Homozygous Curl producing, refers to the horses that have not yet been Gene tested for KRT25 or SP6.

DISCLAIMER #2:
These tables of percentages are based on the assumption that Curliness in horses, is determined by a single gene pair, which we now know there are two dominant genes we can test for.

DISCLAIMER #3:
The only way we can list fairly accurate percentages, is to list them by groups of known type Curly mares. This is not reflective of most breeding programs, since most stallions are bred to groups of mares of more than one type (heterozygous, homozygous, and smooth or straight coated mares.) Obviously the mix of several type mares will affect the percentage.

DISCLAIMER #4:
We can now test mares to know if they are heterozygous, or homozygous for KRT25 and SP6.

DISCLAIMER DISCLAIMER:
Even though a lot of this information is based on theory, we still thought it would be accurate enough to be helpful to you.

When breeding your Curly stallion to STRAIGHT* mares:

if he has produced:

he has this % chance of being Homozygous:

1 straight foal   0 %
1 curly coated foal 50 %
2 curly coated foals 75 %
3 curly coated foals 87.5 %
4 curly coated foals 93 %
5 curly coated foals 96 %
6 curly coated foals 98 %

*For this table, we have equated a smooth coated Curly bred mare, with a straight haired mare of another breed. In actuality, we do NOT know, mares of these two distinctions, to be equal in chances of producing curly foals sired by curly stallions. However, until we do know from research, this gives us the best chance at estimating a stallion's ability to produce curly coated foals.

Breeding a Curly Stallion to Heterozygous* Curly mares:

if he has produced: he has this % chance of being Homozygous:
1 straight foal   0 %
1 curly coated foal 25 %
2 curly coated foals 43 %
3 curly coated foals 51 %
4 curly coated foals 58 %
5 curly coated foals 68 %
6 curly coated foals 76 %
7 curly coated foals 82 %
8 curly coated foals 87 %

*If a curly coated mare, has produced 1 or more straight coated foals, she is considered heterozygous for producing curls. If she has never produced a straight foal, it would be up to you whether you think she is homozygous or heterozygous for producing curls, and whether to include her in the number of heterozygous mares bred. A homozygous mare theoretically would not be able to produce a smooth coated foal, therefore, would be of no value in establishing whether the stallion was heterozygous or homozygous for producing curls.

List of Suspected Homozygous Stallions- Historical Information

from Bunny's Webpage
The Curly stallions listed below have sired all Curly haired foals to date. Sometimes after a stallion has sired many Curly foals, a straight haired foal may be born. This is why it is titled, Suspected Homozygous Stallions. Here is some information about them.
